The Academy of Management (AOM) Annual Meeting is a cornerstone event in the field of management, attracting over 10,000 attendees from diverse disciplines every year. This year’s event, held in Chicago, served as a global platform where scholars, researchers, and practitioners gathered to exchange the latest findings and engage in critical discussions. With over 2,000 sessions taking place in Chicago, AOM offers opportunities for networking, exposure to innovative research, and collaboration among thought leaders in management.

The Sanger Leadership Center had a significant presence at AOM 2024, contributing to the dialogue on leadership development through an award-winning Professional Development Workshop (PDW). This interactive session, designed for scholars and educators, showcased evidence-based tools for leadership development, emphasizing the link between research and practice. Highlights included cutting-edge technologies like AI-enabled case discussions by Olav Sorenson (UCLA) and interactive simulations for team leadership by Henrik Bresman (INSEAD). Additionally, Michigan Ross Professor and Sanger Research Lab member, Sue Ashford, presented the Leadership Crisis Challenge (LCC), an action-based leadership development program offered annually to all University of Michigan students. This session was deemed the most industry-applicable and accessible workshop of the Organizational Behavior Division and received the Best Broad Relevance Professional Development Workshop Award.

Sanger’s involvement at AOM underscores the importance of leadership research and its practical applications. The meeting provided a platform for Sanger’s researchers, including doctoral candidates like Christina Bradley, Manju Ganti, Devin Kilpatrick, Zoe Schwingel-Sauer, and Elizabeth Trinh, to present their work, receive valuable feedback, and engage with a broad array of perspectives. The meeting also provided an important opportunity to help raise awareness of scholarship at the University of Michigan more broadly, including at the well-attended Michigan Reception.

The exposure and recognition at AOM enhance the impact of the Center and its Lab members’ work, contributing to the ongoing development of leadership practices that are grounded in research.
