Sanger Faculty Director, Dr. Lindy Greer, recently provided a keynote address at the MERIT Summit at SDA Bocconi School of Management in Milan, Italy. This event brings together thought leaders from higher education, consulting, and corporations to discuss key topics relating to corporate learning and development. Dr. Greer shared her work on power dynamics by introducing the executives in attendance to her HIPPO (HIghest Paid Person in the Organization, or a hippopotamus, one of the deadliest animals in the world) leadership model. She discussed the importance of organizational hippos/leaders knowing when to demonstrate power by being out of the water (crisis, challenges to values, etc.) and when to be good hippos, mostly submerged with just their ears above the surface, listening and making space for their teams to share and for other to lead.
