On Monday, April 8, 2024, Chief National Correspondent of ABC News, Matt Gutman, took the stage for Sanger’s Leadership Dialogues Speaker Series.
The Leadership Dialogues event invites accomplished industry, political, and non-profit leaders to discuss the newest ideas in research and practice with U-M faculty. From CFOs like Kofi Bruce and Robin Washington, to CEOs such as David Deno, Paul Polman, and Mary Barra, the speakers share advice on various topics and lessons learned from their diverse experiences.
The event was moderated by Ethan Kross, Michigan LSA and Ross professor and author of bestselling book, Chatter: The Voice in Our Head, Why It Matters, and How to Harness It. The two discussed leading with empathy, mental health, and various other topics.
Michelle Austin, Sanger’s assistant director of programs and partnerships, commented on why it was important to bring the topic of mental health to the program series.
“Prioritizing mental health as leaders sets the tone for our teams. When we’re open about our own journeys, it encourages others to do the same,” Austin said. “We heard a lot from Dr. Kross and Matt Gutman about this during the talk. Vulnerability is critical: it helps create a culture of support and understanding, leading to happier, healthier teams.”
